Americans buy nearly half of the world's supply of coffee. Tea is the most popular caffeine drink in British countries. Cola drinks are popular worldwide. 70% of all drinks in America are colas. All these tend to take the place of plain water.
Caffeine whips up the brain, heart, digestive tract, and kidneys without allowing for periods of rest and relaxation.
These all give a feeling of wakefulness and energy. Later on the letdown begins as the caffeine or theobromine wears off and the drug counteracting mechanism of the body takes effect, causing easy fatigue and depression.
Under the influence of caffeine and/or theobromine:
Delicate thinking and acting is impaired. Spiders make bizarre webs.
The heart beats stronger and stronger.
The stomach pours out more hydrochloric acid even after decaffeinated beverages. Components other than caffeine cause constipation.
Kidneys eliminate an increased volume of urine with more adrenalin compounds.
Diabetes is aggravated; this effect in rats may persist for two months.
Growth of normal cells is retarded, and genes may become damaged.
A much wiser policy is to drink pure water, unsweetened natural juices, cereal beverages, or safe herb teas.
